What is boutique medicine?

Boutique medicine also called concierge medicine, or retainer medicine, patients pay their physician an annual retainer fee. In exchange, patients receive guaranteed same-day or next-day appointments, no-wait appointment times, longer examination times and 24/7 access to their physician via e-mail, cell phones and/or pagers. Concierge Medicine is a controversial subject. Many legislatures have taken a wait and see approach as to whether or not to control, limit, restrict, or specifically permit this type of practice with legislation. Medicare has instructed its offices to only advise physicians to be careful not to charge for things already paid for by Medicare.

I sought these links with an emphasis on California, but some apply to national reviews or other states. Make a Google search for 'boutique medicine', 'retainer medicine', 'concierge medicine' - each will provide a slightly different result on the same subject.
